Why Is It Hard To Attract Soccer Referees At A Local Level ? Have Your Say And Any Ideas On How To Get New Referees Interested.

  1. Pay them more!

Sounds silly but how else do you attract someone to do a job that quite frankly isn't that much fun! I dont condone it but in the heat of battle ive dished out some good sprays to refs in my time and im telling ya, what they get paid wouldn't be enough to get me to be on the recieving end of it. Much more fun to have a beer and be a spectator when ya retired.

Make the money too good to refuse!

  2. Well said Alan, while not guarenteed to get more or better Refs it would be a step in the right direction to make the position more attractive, the old saying pay peanuts get Monkeys or in our case, the ever reliable ones that have been around for years.
there are some good young ones around but will take a few years before they are ready for Premier League,
By offering a better deal for refs in the monetry since would be a step in the right direction.
I think all players at some stage should officiate games even at Junior level just to see how hard it is, then try it at Premier League level, maybe the abuse from on and off the pitch might be lessend, then maybe not.

  3. I submitted 2 proposals, 1 to FFT and 1 to the club.
FFT proposal is it must increase the payments to at least double and be aiming at tripling the existing fee structure. It must be possible for a senior qualified referee to make it just about their sole income at around $400/week. This means that they become employees of FFT and as such must attend regular fitness and educational sessions as well be available for clubs to utilise as trainer/educators.
Clubs should be able to fund this expense via their gate returns, it may mean lifting gate fees to $8 and even charging $3 for the womens games on sundays. It will provide an attractive pathway for players who aren't going to make senior players but who may enjoy trying refereeing and will reimburse them enough that they may only rquire a part time job to top up their incomes.
CLUB proposal- That every registered player must complete a level 5 referees course before they can play. This course is the entry level and most players should complete it easily, however if you fail then you simply retake the exam (multiple choice questions) at another session. The following year simply requires a refresher course. The advantages are that the club will then have a lot of qualified referees to do lines and centres, players will begin to know the rules and probably lessen the "sprays" that referees cop at the moment, and should lower the large number of Dissent Cards that are handed out now adays.
It will allow past players and supporters to sit in on these courses and get some qualifications.
It should allow some players to experience refereeing who normally wouldn't and therefore allow them to turn to refereeing instead of playing.
It will provide the referees association with the opportunity to conduct level 4 courses and get some interested participants.

We cannot stay as we are with the shortage of an ageing number of existing referees.

I also beleive that the Northern Presidents should be meeting every month as per the old Noerthern Assoc days so we can get on top of this and other issues with some constructive outcomes not just our thoughts on a blog page.
I beleive the Hobart doesn't have the time or resources to solve our issues we must become proactive as a group of clubs.

OOPs someone just kicked my soap box, was that CA ?

  4. Agree with most Nigel, need to massively increase pay structure, but also make it easier for ex-SENIOR players (should be respected by most current players) to get into it.

Most ex players that i know of who thought about doing it, found like the bl##dy coaching that it is too hard and time consuming to do all the courses and stay accredited.

Biggest downfall is lack of a real income though, not just peanuts and Sentinel states. Gee, my leg is getting better each week so i might even take it up if it was $400 a week (one center two lines)?

As for good young ones coming through, gee where are they, we have said it before but they leave, lack of money and constant abuse, warranted and unwarranted???

  5. Nigel

Would you send a copy of your proposal for Referees Standing Committee to consider?

    Thanks

  6. Come on guys and gals, how about some thoughts, even if they are reasons why you wouldn't. Burying our heads and ignoring the problem isn't going to help, it will simply lead to a hockey type of system where each club will nominate several referees for senior and ressie games and they will go where they are told, usually not to one of their clubs games and clubs will be fined if they fail. Probably be part of your team registration that you have to submit these peoople before you are accepted.
This is surely the last thing we want.

  7. agree with some of your thorts nigel but to be honest i think thats a bit much to be offering for a ref, i mean under best case if a ref did all 3 centres for $400 then fair enuff but most would be 2 lines 1 centre and for 4.5 hours work i believe 400 is overpaying ($88/hr) i personally think if they were to be paid that much then like you say they should be classed as an employee like you say but also that the level of professionalism would need to improve.
AS for attracting them i like the idea about traing members of the club, but what are the uncentives offered for young upcoming refs because it looks like they arent really getting many oportunities at senior levels.

  8. Thanks TD, hope to answer some of your points.
Refereeing is much like an apprenticeship you start with lower divisions and a level 4 course and progress thru the years to level 1 and doing senior matches.
And just like apprenticeships you get paid accordingly, you still put in the same hours tho, so...
A Ref who has passed both level 4 then level 3 courses should be doing a centre in Unders or Ressies and 2 lines on a Saturday.
They will be training 2 nights per week minimum and attending technical info nights as well.
My knowledge of pay structures is a little old so excuse the accuracy but you should get the idea.
Scenario 1...Currently as a level 3 I get sent from Burnie to Lonnie to do an Unders centre and then 2 lines. I leave Burnie at 7.30am so I can get to the ground and do my pitch inspection prior to the unders kickoff, i get 2 club linesmen, do my instructions and away we go, 15 minutes at half time, finish the match quickly fill in as much match details in my paperwork as possible and then back out for the ressies line, no time for lunch. 15 minutes at half time, wolf down some food and drink, a quick toilet break and back out, 15 minutes between Ressie and Seniors and out again, 15 minutes at half time then in after the game for a well earned shower and a quick bite before heading back to Burnie to get home at around 7pm - 7.30. Oh and breaks between games get shorter if time on is played, I have done a centre in the unders and not left the pitch as the ressies were ready to go!
For this- Unders centre $40, ressies line $30 Seniors line $45, travel $50 so i get $165 for my 12 hours ($14/hr), the same on the coast saves travel (lose $50)so just an 8 hour day ($14/hr).
Spend 5 years hard at it and get good enough and fit enough to pass level 1 means Unders line $20 (wonder why senior refs won't do them?!) Ressies line $30 and senior centre $90 so Lonnie with travel $190 ($16/hr) on the coast $140 ($18/hr).
So like I said double it and a senior ref doing 3 games would get $280 for their 8 hour day, Triple and it goes to $420, still just $50/hr.
Womens centres on sunday would add another $40 to the income, but you would need to be fit to back up from Saturdays effort as well as have an understanding family/girlfriend !!!
Don't forget as an employee you would lose some 30% in tax as well.
An incentive is that young senior referees have the opportnity to go to National and World Championships as well advancing into A League etc.

Hope this answers some questions and maybe raises some interest.

  9. very goo dreading and when you put it like that makes perfec sense but goodluck convincing others, only thing idont think would pass is the increased gate fees i think apart from that as long as the level of professionalism increaes then you have a good point

  10. Division Current Proposed

    U/18's Centre $40 Centre $80
    Line $20 Line $40
    Line $20 Line $40

    Reserves Centre $60 Centre $120
    Line $30 Line $60
    Line $30 Line $60

    Seniors Centre $90 Centre $200
    Line $45 Line $100
    Line $45 Line $100

    Womens Centre $40 Centre $100
    Line $20 Line $50
    Line $20 Line $50

    TOTAL $460 $1,000

Therefore senior ref doing lines in early match and Womens centre would make $400 for weekend (est average of 13 hrs weekends + 3 hrs training @ $25 / Hr)

  12. Sorry about not lining up, best I could do?

So clubs would need to find $540 per home weekend extra, maybe from reduced subs from FFT (we could reduce some of the massive contributions that they give the Northern clubs)?
