  2. Hey TD - Looks good (apart from some dodgy photos of some even dodgier and shady characters in the life member section)!!
    Well done!

  3. because we cant play at ntca as they are getting wicket ready for cricket.

not sure why burch.maybe prez can inform you.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Determined NTCA has been closed since end of roster seasons due to the heavy rains this year to get wicket up for cricket witch starts in mid OCT. Normally the cut off time for use of ground is mid sept but this season is not an option.

Obviously we want to play in Lonnie, so we approach Lonnie United whom we have a good relationship with, and they help ys out where they can as us being a club that shares a facility with another winter user, sometimes its hard to schedule unrostered games (eg cup games etc) at the NTCA.

  5. Thats fair enough :) well good luck none the less for the weekend, i really hope you guys do well, show the southern teams, that ur side is quality, and its not jsut the south with the quality players.

  6. Heard a rumour last night that City have 3 potential recruits coming in next season. Any truth to that Alex? info was third hand so ya never know how correct it might be?

  9. Not 100% sure as yet alan, but from a personal pint of view, our squad needs bout 3 experienced quality players to it, i think we have the right youth, just not the experienced players to help them and teach them, haha so i hope these rumors are right mate

  11. bit of experience always handy for the kids. But great to see u sticking largely with the young boys. Im sure in a year or two you'll be back up challenging at the top. Love to see a few more devonoport vs city clashes like we used to get 5 or 6 years ago. On for young and old and the best standard soccer ive seen in tassie!

hope the recruits come through for ya!

  12. Yes fingers crossed, use to look forward to those games all year! And with rangers getting a quality squad and a few other teams lifting, i think most teams next hpefully can beat any other on their given day maybe with the exception of Launceston.

Heard rumors tonight they may not be next year??? Anybody know anything more than a rumor on this?

    ReplyDelete
  13. No that's just a rumour Alex, they will be there...

  14. Rangers lost! Rangers were winning 2-1 until 30 seconds to go, when clarence pinched one. then no score in extra time (clarence missed penalty in extra time (1 minute to go), clarence won in penaltys after being a penalty behind, (bremner missed against his old team to give them a sniff), Ranger captain missed to give them the win!

  15. Bugger, makes the Northern league look shabby at best, next year guys lets all make this a priority?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Another close match with the southern side just shading the northern side as in the previous three.

was hoping rangers would win to keep the teams playing agst different sides - now its just more of the same.

Still, in the absence of a state league, a good concept that allows the better teams from each end of the island to test each other.

Could Clarence come from 4th to win state title? They will be tested agst Zebras - who might find the break a useful recovery period from their tussle agst prospect.

  17. I reckon that this is the start of a long domination by Southern clubs in this series.
They have been favoured by the FFT for the past 3 years especially with State and FIS squads as well as many visits by interstate coaches and coaching courses developing many quality junior coaches.
Add to this the farcical, and it can only be classified as farcical, situation where we no longer have a state director of coaching.
How can they justify to continue to expect northern clubs to support the Federation when we are so short changed with infrastructure and support from them.
I urge all northern clubs to establish a norhern academy and the NW clubs to do the same, get your acts together stop the in fighting and begin to develop and nurture players in your areas otherwise we will lose all the ground we have made up in the past 15 years.

  18. Nigel,I agree with you 100% but nothing new and we cannot blame the southern clubs for it.The North and N.W. clubs in particularare only milking grounds for FFT.This has been the case since I had started playing the game and brings into memory that the North/N.W. clubs decided to go out of soccer Tasmania and form their own body which run their competition very effectively and minimal costs. It appears to me that we had people with strength and vision then that would not allow themselves to be used by the Hobart conglomerate because this is exactly what it is.Northern clubs and juniors pay a lot of money from their own cofers and grants made by the government on their behalf and where does it all go?
We certainly see nothing up this end and our reps on FFT go along with the rest passively accepting everything unless it affects their own clubs.
So, I would say to the Northern clubs..STAND UP..UNITE..AND FIGHT.

  19. Nigel

I dont work for FFT but....

coaching courses when offered were offered state wide. southern coaches also had to wait for mainland people to be brought in to finish courses etc.

The new Director of coaching (altho now called Technical Director or similar) has just commenced and no doubt will be visiting all areas of the state to become acquainted with all the differing needs of the various areas. One would hope coaching courses are again a major priority. You may want to have a discussion with the new person before setting up any academy so that it fits within the overall development strategy being requested by FFA. Concentrating on the 10-13 y/olds may be your best strategy.

Most states also have a game development person who is more grass roots - not sure if FFT have funds to have a seperate person in this role , or whether they will continue with local development officers. Maybe a question for next presidents meeting?

Logan - perhaps the energy would be better placed in making sure the Northern Presidents provide a united voice at their meetings with FFT. And also maybe try to ensure that the information from FFT reaches those within clubs who dont attend those meetings.

And just to clarify - the directors are not REPS for anyone at all - but are elected by all of the members to act in the interests of the global football community within Tasmania. Any dissatisfaction with them can easily be expressed at the AGM - if the members bother to attend.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Amazed, always good to get a southerners view.
Yes coaching courses are offered statewide but invariably they fail up here due to a number of reasons:1 number of attendees required and the cost to run. 2 Also all of the latest have been in Launceston, difficult for coastal people, 3: they are so random and adhoc, usually FFT sets the date with out any consultation with clubs so that most coaches simply cannot be available.
I had a 1 and half hour meeting with our last TD to explain our issues, he was most agreeable however where is he?

Ah Presidents meetings !!?? How many did the Northern Presidents have this year.

Should our FFT directors be required to visit individual club committee meetings say twice a year so clubs can interact with FFT?

It's not the Souths fault that the North is struggling and the sooner we look at our setup the better we will be.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I dont quite agree that the results in this series is the start of a long domination by Southern clubs.

All matches could have gone either way - in particluar one on penalties, and one a late penalty. The other two also could have gone either way.

So to me its simply a case of keep on doing what you have done - promoting the talented players when they are ready to step up, and wherever possible appoint coaches who are in step with the trends in the modern game and are able to adapt those to the squads they have available.

I have a positive outlook on the future of Tasmanian footballers - whatever their locality. It would be nice to see some planning by FFT so as to provide them with a stage on which to show their talents - along the lines of the Youth League matches last year, and the State games for both men and women.

  22. I attended one of the presidents meeting this year, as a representative for launceston City. And to be honest i wasn't there to say anything jsut collect notes and what not. However what i did notice was all the questions, which the presidents from all clubs were asking, were never answered. To me the FFT people who go to these meetings, go there without any understanding about anything. PLease correct me i i'm wrong, but dont all presidents get to send their questions away first, in hope that soccer tas can answer these questions? think personally the only the the north/north west will ever get a fair go with everything that the south get, is to appoint a person from Northern part of tasmania so his soul job is to meet with northern/ and north west sides, and report back to the fft head quarters once a week. Instead of getting a guy come up to our end of the state once or twice a year.

  23. I was part of the original Northern Committee for many years, now I don't believe that we branch back off again, that is not working cohesively with the rest of the State.
However, as we are a seperate competition, and yes a fair way from what happens in Hobart, I believe that the Northern Clubs should put the structure back in place, that is have monthly meetings, and have a representative that reports to FFT after each meeting.
I have been to the meetings that FFT call and attend now a days, and they are fundamentally flawed. They allow a full and frank discussion on isssues and ideas but then say they will take in back to Hobart for appraisal and feedback, well thats great for them but as Determined says nothing happens. And it's another 3 months before we raise the same issues again.

Lets get our act together and have a say in where and what we do.
The previous Northern League worked because clubs communicated and fixed problems TOGETHER.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Agree with both sides of discussion, the standard of play is slipping, not just up north but state-wide. If you look at Devonport and even the Sharks, both have more than half of their squads missing from 3 or 4 years ago, yet both are still competitive and the northern comp has evened out (we are no where near as strong as a few years ago).

In my mind it has dropped of as a result of the top end junior development/academies that we just dont pursue as intently as in past years? No NWTSSA has been a major concern for the NW, and has seen only Ulverstone continue to really support their juniors (and they will reap the benefits in years to come)?

Playing the same opposition year in year out with just a few new young faces each year gets boring, i for one, loved the old state-league, but the financial costs were massive, find a sponsor someone and get us heading upwards not back to a very social competition?

As for FFT, yes they could do things better, communication has always been a big negative, but we are to blame as we elect them, and do not really push hard enough for important issues, that's if we even bother to attend meetings or contact FFT?

Final 4 was a good idea, but were we really ready for it up here, with players unavailable, grounds unavailable or unplayable, we need to ensure that we get more professional and that will make FFT listen and follow or unite us all in one direction?

Amazed, yes we could contact FFT and discuss what "they" want for 10 -13 year olds, but then we lose them to the "Southern Institute", and some lose interest as they cannot all move south as Hugo has done. We need to concentrate on 8 -10 year olds, getting their skill levels up, then as individual clubs we should all have a junior development officer (even paid, as is more important than senior coach) and strive to develop 12 - 16 year olds, those who do will all reap the benefits in the long run?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Nigel, you are spot on.As I said earlier the North West is as usual the arse end on the list for FFT due perhaps to distance from Hobart.I get a feeling that Amazed is new to Tasmanian football but also willig to have a go.
Bad Boy may I ask why we could not have a junior academy in this part of the island?State funds would to some extent be available if we try[through FFT].Clubs can help with juniors but have in mind that players have to train, play and need some time for their private life [otherwise you will not get young ones for the future].A lot of money goes to FFt from various sources for junior development...STATEWIDE.
As for the standard of the game I agree with Amazed that the difference is hardly obvious.(have watched both games at Ulverstone)

    ReplyDelete
  26. sorry Logan - not new at all - but have a view on most things as have experienced most things in Tassie soccer - played U19 as a 13y/o, seniors at 15. State u/age teams in early 70's. Have played, coached and refereed at premier league level and been involved in club, association and referee administration. Have also been involved in development squads. And have watched two sons perform at nationals few years ago now.

I do have a positive outlook for the game in Tassie - and I think you might find FFT are working behind the scenes at gaining resources to faciliate improving things in North/North-West. Lets hope it all comes to fruition.

The TIS for football is based in the south - not because FFT say so but because thats where the TIS have it based - just like some TIS programs for other sports are based in Launceston.

Bad Boy - its not FFT but FFA that set out the guidelines for junior /youth development, especially for those aspiring to be at the elite level - but also for those in underpinning development squads. Just keep an open mind and an open dialogue with FFT and you may find everyone is really on the same page.

  27. From Walter Pless' site:

The Hobart Youth Carnival was played over the weekend for boys and girls ranging from under-10s through to under-15s in the boys’ sections and from under-10s through to under-16s in the girls’ sections.

Apart from some problems when one venue was unexpectedly closed because of poor ground conditions, things generally went smoothly.

Central Region won the boys’ under-10 and under-12 sections, while Eastern Region came out on top in the under-11 boys.

Southern Tasmania took out the under-13 boys’ title, while Northern Tasmania’s under-14s were successful in the combined boys’ under-14 and under-15 section.

Central Region girls won the under-10s and Northern Suburbs the girls’ under-12 section.

The North-West Tasmania girls’ under-14 side was champion in the combined under-13 and under-14 girls’ section, while the Southern Tasmanian under-16 girls came up trumps in that age group.

With the honours thus spread around fairly widely, it seems that there are many promising youngsters coming through the sport in all areas of the State.

  28. Now the seasons over here are my tips for NPL b & fs etc for 2009:

    Seniors: Chris Mckenna

Likely challengers will be Brayden Mann (20 goals in a dise that finished 6th will mean he will grab the majority)
Sam Hughes great year by that kid. From my lads Derek Schipper, Toddy Hingston and Paul Bremner will all push hard, but in a side that was even across the board cant see us having the winner. Cant see many cahllengers from Knights in what was an even side.

Other challengers Kieran Mulraney, Kaimon Johnson and Tom Roach at Somerset

Ressies: Andy Gray or Kaz Douglas. Rangers runners up but only player with any chance would have been gabriel tams who is ineligible.

Under 18s: The Knights young guy who smahed in all the goals I would think, sorry cant remember his name.

    Ladies: Chelssea again

Coach:Roslan (I hope), will be close with Troy Scott, Kim Rigby, Dane Hudson and Tom Mcginn all in the running.

Ref: Chris parr, however I left this up to our coaches to do, and they voted for someone else.

  29. I'm tipping Kenny to win too! Best and most influential player in the league, even when not scoring goals. Only concern is the continued rise of Sean Howe. He'll take some votes away, especially in the middle part of the season. For me he's head and shoulders the best midfielder in the comp and it wouldn't suprise me if he won it.

watched Sommerset a couple of times and wasn't overly impressed with Roach but all reports from others were that he had a good season so he'll come into calculations along with Hingston, Mann (goals = votes). Ambrose the one who impresses me most from rangers but seems to be no mention of him when talking bout awards, Did he miss too many games through injury??

Harris had a good year for knights and scored goals from midfield, Should poll well.

Cant comment on reserves and unders as i didn't see any.

Coach of the year for me should be Dane Hudson or Troy Scott.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Al Funky probably missed too many games during the year, got injured against Somerset when just hitting peak really.

Can understand why you have him up there Al the 3 games you saw him play (port at port and the 2 knights games in June he was banging it). He then missed around a month and thus any chance of figuring, if had played all year would have been right up there I reckon. Des, Toddy and Paul Bremner are the 3 highest vote getters according to FFT.

Yep forgot about Sean will be up thre as well expect it to be close

    ReplyDelete
  31. Sean Howe was surprisingly not in our top three. They were Kieran Mulraney, Scott Wilson & myself. I don't rate my chances too highly. I missed 2 games & played the majority of the others either injured or at best about 80% fit. I think the only way any of the Devonport lads will have a chance is if it's a low count. My tip is the winner will be a new boy on the scene (just not sure which one!!)

Devonport's calcutta & B&F count is on tomorrow night which should also be interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Can I bring up the final series again and make a suggestion?

I think the State Wide Championship is a great series, it has kept the season interesting until the very last league game for clubs like Ulverstone, Somerset, Riverside, Prospect in the north and Newtown, Kingborough, Clarence and Glenorchy in the south, it gives clubs something to play for and as had been said “finals are the Australian Way!”

I would change it slightly to go a little something like this

    Tasmanian Champions League.

    Going on this season’s results,

Top three from the north and the top three from the south qualify automatically for the following seasons Champions league, that would be from the south, South Hobart, Tilford Zebs and Glenorchy knights, with Northern Rangers, Devonport Strikers and Prospect Knights from the North.

4th and 5th from south and north would go into play offs at end of the year (Clarence United vs Kingborough Lions and Riverside Olympic vs Somerset Sharks) in a home and away round qualifying final with away goals counting.

At the end of each year you would have the 4 teams from north and 4 from the south, draw them into 2 random groups of four (done by FFT sometime), they would then play a home and away series (6 games in total) during the next year, we already play four games in the SWC anyway so you would be only finding an extra 2 weekends in the year for this.

Remainder of the clubs in the state will form the State Wide Vase (as in 2000 ) as a second tear comp. this gives the lower teams a greater chance of winning some silverware so it’s a win win

You would be left with the following in a State Wide Vase knock out Competition.
    Hobart Olympic
    Metro
    Taroona
    Nelson
    Hobart Utd
    Kingston Cannons
    Newtown
    Beachside
    Kingborough Lions
    University
    Nelson
    Launceston United
    Launceston City
    Burnie United
    Ulverstone Reds
Somerset Sharks (presuming Sharks and Lions get beaten by there higher ranked opponent)

So they have 4 knock out rounds from round of 16 to the vase final any way to play during the 6 weeks the TCL would be playing.

The TCL could start a week before the season proper starts to get things rolling and finish on the week after the last round of matches.

Then following that, the top two in each group of the Tas Champions League would cross over to play each other, 1st from group one to play 2nd from group two and 1st from group two would play 2nd from group one in a home and away leg with away goals counting, the winners to advance to the State wide Champions League one game only final at KGV regardless of who is there.

If you still had the need to play the winner of the Northern League v the winner of the southern league for the State Champions game you could, but I cant see the point if you went with the above plan.

So you would have available in 2011

    A Southern Premiership
    A Northern Premiership
    A Tasmanian Champions League Champion
    A State Wide Vase Winner
    Possible State Cup game.
Teams would be bustling for State Wide Champions League Qualification for the following season, while the State Wide Champions League sides would be trying to get into the top two in their group to qualify for the Tasmanian Champions League Finals.

This should in theory eliminate the all four southern teams in the State wide championship, but it still could end up that way if the random draw comes out right!

You get a far more comprehensive State Wide League taste and I think any team in their right mind would be after the Tasmanian Champions League mantel. FFT should probably make the final prize money allocation atleast even with NPL and SPL Premiers as to TCL champions winners cheque.

That’s my idea, I would be interested to hear your thoughts.
    Regards

    Captain Aus.

  33. The above is not just my idea, but the thoughts of Rohan Pooley as well, we were tossing this around a couple of years ago, and I thought it would be worth while throwing out for discussion again.

  34. After this years final series, I would suggest that all teams in the NPL work on improving a great deal before looking at playing combined comps, don't forget not one NPL team made it past the first playoff games? Bloody disappointing, even embarrassing, i know all tried hard but come on, how far off are we at the moment? As i have stated earlier in the year, we are not improving much if any up here, we all need to go back to juniors and work on our future players to lift our standard???

As for idea I can see merit as i still can for a return to state league but the cost of playing southern teams (travel) has to be addressed prior to any changes otherwise players will drop out due to extra costs?

Now for the "dig" - gee you've been working on it for 2 years and now Rangers are finally up there you post it, come on mate, you shouldn't have said that, just asking for a bite :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Kev wouldnt say that there is a huge gap between the North and south mate. After all North has won last 3 of the rep games and lets be honest the first week of the finals the results were close. We went out on penalites, Devonport on last kick of the day and from waht I here River and Knights were competitive. Just the way they fell, but wont be like that every year I guarantee.
