I think that is a good idea the only way i could see this working on a saturday is to play the Women at the U18 time slot and then play the U18 on the Sunday
It could work, i wonder if any clubs have proposed that to their clubs? Maybe there needs to be an U18 Girls comp also! We lose to many i think as apart from Laun City, each club only has 1 team
i think you could still run the unders on a saturday as most clubs have acess to 2 grounds or they have lights up to scratch, since we have been playing girls on a saturday i see that we attract more spectators to the Game and alot dont wont to come out 2 days in a row .
PLayin on a saturday is good for raising the profile and attracting more spectators, but generally the 2nd ground in which the women play on is not up to the standard of the main pitch. Also, there is not adequate changerooms for 4 teams to play on the saturday. Even womens k.o at 1130 (which most womens saturday games have been for this reason) its still a rush for everyone to get in and out of changerooms
Thanks 'Governess' for setting a blog for Women's Soccer in the North - North/West.
Great to see so much input here now into the Women's game.
Please put your thoughts and suggestions here for the time being - sure the Governess will approve of for the time being (please) - there is a form/register being designed for the FFT website for your suggestions - to be launched very soon for the Standing Committee to follow up on.
As Coach of N.Rangers I have pushed my Club to get as many games on a Saturday as possible for a number of reasons. 1> We are the Women's "Premier League" 2> The teams get to show their skills and be noticed 3> Better chance of having 'official' officials 4> Helps build unity and morale within the Club and the 'code' in general
Personaly in the North/NorthWest I would like to see: either an Under 18 Ladies Comp OR a Div 1 League - like in the South of the State - (dependimg on numbers). We do have girls involved to Under 16 level but I beleive we have to provide an avenue for these girls to continue - regardless of skill/ability which at present is not happening.
For the sake of Soccer and in particular the Women's League please do not remain 'anonymous'as there are some good positive comments here and I encourage ALL to help in any way we can to promote Women's Soccer in Tasmania and in particular OUR area of the State.
Saturday's would be the best,im sure between everyone we could work out a way to have all teams play on a saturday. its great for a club to be togetehr for an entire day & support all teams involved. i also agree that spectators dont really want to go out for 2 days running.
saturdays may be the way to go, John...i do like the idea
in order to fill up a 2nd roster enough (so you don't end up having 4 teams there) an idea might be to approach the highschools and colleges, see if they would like to field a team. make the rego system approachable financially to parents and players for a sunday league. comments?
Jeff, the comments are noted and I appreciate the input - beleive me. If players are Under 16 chances are that they play for Clubs in the NTJSA and I know the Private schools have their own comp (although i think it only has approx 5 game roster) but yes I can see the likes of LC (Launceston College)being approached as they will have the 17/18yr old age group we should be interested in, but maybe the Clubs have to push a little harder to stop the 'drop-off' that happens once players can no longer stay in the Junior comp - (which Launceston City have managed to do and Launceston Utd have been forced to do) the rego/finance side is set by FFT. On this we have to push the fact that Soccer compared to a lot of other sports is cheaper by far. Keep the thoughts and ideas coming though. John Crooks WSC
I am all for the raising of Women's Soccer in Tasmania afterall we do pay the same amount of Registration as the Men but unfortunately we are not given the same amount of respect and privelages. Where grounds allow why don't the U18's play at 11.30am on the 2nd ground, the Reserves KO at 10.30am the Women @ 12.30 and Men @ 2.30pm.
from what im aware burnie an rangers when they play night games have their women playing on the sat. dev have the second ground to also do the same thing as burnie.
whats wrong with the women playing on the second ground at 1130. the field standard is fine at burnie and devonport as well if they wanted to. cant see a second division or unders league happening
We at Rangers since we have ahd the lights have tried to schedule all our ladies games for Saturdays, in an effort to keep the club together as much as possible. The only games that have been scheduled for NTCA on a Sunday are where opposition clubs wont play Saturdays. To my recollection the girls only have 2 Sundays at the NTCA in 09.
Yeah thanks mark for putting effort in to organise saturday home games, i know we enjoy playing saturdays and also stay or turn up early to support other teams on saturdays, i dont know why other clubs would prefer sunday's over saturday's
it's probably not so much that they prefer Sundays but have no other option. Lights, ground availability, ground condition etc are all factors in this.
One step at a time. Yes having another League would be good I admit for younger girls coming through to play in what City/Allies have done has been good as with Launceston Utd
Is this something we look at for the future?
Current issue is: Promoting Women's Soccer
1> Do the girls who are playing the game prefer Satuday or Sunday games? (I have stated previously some reasons/benefits for Sat over Sunday)
2> Ground availability: Somerset appear to be going to be able to have 2 grounds soon. Burnie have this and seem pleased with more Sat games and the No2 ground is every bit as good as the main ground. Ulverstone don't have the benefit of a second ground.Player availability for Sat games? Devonport have with great effort on Stewart Lomax part are going to give this a go by playing the women's game on No2 ground on Sat 23 May against N.Rangers. Prospect Knights don't have a second ground but could possibly use the same second ground that City use - depending on roster - but player availability on Sat appear their biggest issue. Launceston City/Allies have the 2 grounds and lights and they are also giving more Sat games a go and the ground condition on No2 is of a high standard. Launceston United have the 2 grounds also and are prepared to play games on Saturdays. Both ground conditions fairly equal. UTAS don't have the structure for 2 grounds and again player availability maybe an issue for them also. Northern Rangers club have been active in promoting Sat games for the Women's team where/when possible. Riverside Olympic have the 2 grounds but no Women's team at all.
Yes there have been some comments in relation to changing rooms also being an issue - but this is something that can be worked on - for now the teams have been able to manage and it is a small 'negative' on games being played on Saturdays.
"Ulverstone don't have the benefit of a second ground.Player availability for Sat games?" Mate, have you actually been to the Ulverstone ground? There's definitely a second pitch set up for High School games.
Stewart Lomax compliments once again the Governess on making the decision to register this Blog,it's a great tool for a voice on our game and we don't don't need people hiding behind the Anonymous name tag,If you have a point of view you get more respect by putting your name to it,then let people agree to disagree, then move on. I personally stopped commenting on the Blog due to the idiotic comments made by those standing in the shadows. This is a great chance for construtive (and funny) discussion lets use it accordingly. It's great to see all the construtive discussion on the womens game,it's quite obvious there is only one way to raise the profile of the game that is to play the games on Saturday. How we go about it is still a long way off and won't change untill FFT are involved and accept the need .Untill then the girls will have to make the sacrifice of playing on the smaller back grounds,Share change rooms with the men teams.Stand under 6x3 open tents on rain swept freezing days with 40 other people (which happend to us)the whole experience was at least unpleasant and did not achieve what we are aiming at. In saying that, if it has to start there then so be it,but when i looked over my shoulder and saw middle aged men making up the numbers in the Reserves made me wonder. Playing on a Saturday is vital to our game, but not playing second fiddle to the mens game(as Usual)and in sub standard conditions.A permanent and a 2009 (not 1979)solution needs to be found. Stewart Lomax.
Paul thanks for info, but I have raised this issue after my first season back in Sept last year,I think most Presidents are aware of the change in perception of the womens game. I am using this very fine blog hoping, as others are, it generates discussion and brings to the attention of others and might help change peoples attitude in the future. While my opinions might be confrontational to some, they are out there and there to be crticised or agreed with ,what I hope to achieve is to make a difference to the womens game . You can coach or play or whatever for 10 years and not do anything positive for the game, thats not me. Stewart Lomax.
Great discussion on here and a great initiative. Certainly provides a different perspective of those - new and and not so new that are involved in the world game! From what I've read Chris McKenna's comments match his on field ability - talented and incisive. Cheers Chris. While supporting the inclusion of the womens' roster - the standard keeps getting better- I think it's important to do this in a coordinated, planned and positive way to accommodate all interests and participants. I'm sure we would all agree that we want to advance the sport of football in Tasmania in a positive, non discriminatory way. Gender, age or otherwise there is a place for everyone.
Lets leave things in the past and move on from where we are now.
Its not so much as "How can we lift the profile of Women's Soccer" lets all be a bit more constructive and positive! post recommendations on the:
"Future Direction of Women's Soccer"
it appears to me that:
1> Saturday is now the prference of players and Clubs are seeing the benefit also in the area covered by this 'blog'. 2> Do the Women's team always have to play on the No2 ground? 3> How can we best manage the change rooms situation? (Burnie are already addressing this problem and some Clubs already have. 4> Should the Womens Premier League game be the pre-game to Men's Premier League game? 5> Marketing and Promotion - where to from here? Stewart Lomax is making the effort - how can we support him more? 6> Statewide Cup - again should the Women's Premier game be the pre game for in the Men's Draw
Rather than complaining about what's wrong lets get proposals going and assist FFT in raising the profile of Women's Soccer and everyone can benefit.
Rangers have the following remaing games scheduled for NTCA on Saturdays for Ladies comp:
Burnie 430pm KO Knights 1230pm KO Ulverstone not sure
Stewie havent heard back from you guys, if you want a 430pm KO on the last round? More than happy to play rather than a sunday.
So it is happening. Standard is the real issue, just too many blow outs, which is due to the fact that a lot of girls only take the sport up up in their late teens (is this correct?). We at Rangers have a lot of girls who have never played at a junior level, however have played other sports, then come along because of friends word of mouth etc. Taking this into account and we have the 3rd best side in the comp, I would say this is worse at a lot of other clubs. Just something to think about.
Yeh sorry Mark I have asked my club to contact you to request the Saturday game & they meet tonight (19th).Just on your comments re the womens game, when I took on the Coaches role at Devonport Ialso took on a coaches role in our local girls U16s High School Comp, were I got to see what girls from 14 to 16 were playing and interested at continuing playing the game in the future.Just for the record of the 15 girls in the team on Sat Night against City I had 1/15 3/16 2/17 2/18year olds (all played last year),Also 3 girls from my school team are playing for Ulverstone ater I sent them over because they live over there. Although others too easily write off a second or 2 tier comp my belief is do it and make it work simple. See you in a couple of weeks Stewy
Mark just read my comments re: the Ulvie girls didn't come out right 1 of the girls is in my school team and 1of the others girls plays in our other U16s team, but it's great to see that these girls can play at and play well in the Premier League given the chance.
